I am confused and I need some help please for those friendly ones who can answer me in English.
I called around and spoke to several boat schools near Mannheim. One said I cant do the course in Englsih. The next school said I can and pay 465.00 per person. Then I called the boating commission who told me that I must write the exam in German. She didnt speak enough English and I couldnt speak enough German. What does she mean write the exam in German? is the Ausbildung or Exam a multiple question exam and I have to only select the correct answers? Or do I have to manually write a lot of sentences in German? Thanks |

the german boat licence exam for the "Sportbootführerschein Binnen" (for rivers and lakes) or "Sportbootführerschein See" for coastal waters is not a multiple choice test.
There are questions and you need to write down the answers in your own handwriting, and your answer needs to contain all important terms and has to be logical correct. So - no offence! - if you don't speak german, it would be very, very hard for your to pass this exam. Perhaps a british licence is accepted in germany? I don't know, but I'm sure here is someone who does ![]() I'm sorry that driving a boat with more than 5hp is that hard in germany but as you might already know, germans tend to do things 110% ![]()

You need only the driving license of your home country, if you are not german citizen.
Your national driving licence is accepted by geman law usual. |

Hi
Yes you have to write the answers in German. I am English and have lived 17 years in Germany my written German is not good but I can read and understand most things. Two years ago I passed both the See and Binnen exams, all I did was buy the books and the question sheets and just kept writing the answers,I went through every question sheet 3 times. It is well worth now making the effort to take the exams now, I have heard that soon the exams will be changing to multiple choice,as it is now you do not have to understand the question fully you just need to write the correct answer. Do not be scared you will pass the exams, I passed them first time and when I took my exam one German was thrown out for cheeting and a few others did not pass the exam. The practical driving test is a joke and anybody can pass it: All I can say is go for it!! Forgot to say before I took my exam I told the examiner that I was English and he told me to write as much as I could in German and if I could not answer a question in German he would accept the answer in English. Needless to say I managed it without writing English Geändert von Andy3535 (25.01.2011 um 14:36 Uhr) |

![]() Nevertheless, I think you will need at least a basic understanding of the german language in order to understand the questions so that you can select the correct memorized answer phrase.

I can read German about 60%, writing is ok but I make grammatical mistakes. My German classes resume end of Feb. I just joined a boat class for me and my husband. We will do the Binnen on March 27 the class that is and then the exam on April 15. Then we will do the Sea Class May 16 and the exam sometime either end of May up to early July we can choose. This school sends their own book with questions and answers. I can do like andy and memorize it. Each school seems to have their own books and do not use a basic book sold in shops. So this school writes their own book and so I asked her a millino questions, talked for one hour and 9 minutes. ![]() ![]() I am determined, and since I may get the license, then forget the mini boat ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Hi Andy, I just signed up for classes as posted above. I hope to do like oyu. Think is, I know I can wig this test in Englsih so it will just be to do like you and write and rewrite the answers. She said the qeustions will come in the exact manner as they are in the book. I hope that is true. But I suppose it does not matter, as long as I know the answers and can write them correctly. they even give a practice exam and practical test before the actual exam, not sure if you had that as well. By Wednesday I should have this book, it is their own book. ![]() ![]() I resume German language classes end of Feb so that too should help, I am determined and wont give up |

Hi
You do not need to write the exact answer to the question, it used to be like that but now you can use key words for the answer. You should first take the see exam and then the practical exam and then sit the binnen exam,if you do it the other way around ,binnen first then you will have to do two practical tests (that is how it used to be it might have changed often the schools forget to mention this!!) The question are exactly as in the book ,and please believe me with a little bit of hard work you will pass these exams. Andy |

WOW, so I dont have to take both practical tests Binnen and Sea? I have to call her back then and sign up for the Sea and do the Binnen afterwards, cuz is the Sea I really want more than Binnen. I didnt know I can do this. I had mentioned it and she said it would be more difficult for me not knowing much German to do it that way, but will still call and ask. So basically you are saying that if I took Sea and passed then all I had to do was the written test for Binnen and no more exam with the boat? ![]() Did you have to do some medical test as well? What all did it entail? ![]() |

If you do the see exam you normally do the practical test on the same day and then after that you just have to sit the binnen exam, I do not think it is more difficult this way around just do not be scared off by the navigation and that at first your brain just cannot absorb all the info being thrown at it. After you have written the answers to all the questions twice it starts to become easier and then the answers come in your head without a problem. Do not concentrate to much on perfect written sentences or spelling mistakes ,to be honest some of my answers were a load of jumbled up crap!!

Unfortunately, that is not in my area. The school i signe dup with charges 180 for binnen, 350 for sea and then 95 euros each for each exam. Does that sound right or too much? so you didnt even attend the Binnen course? You only showed up for the exam? The course for a weekend is the Sea one two days. And the Binnen is one day course. |

So then, I could literally just skip those hundreds and just turn up for the test for binnen if that is, I go with the same school. This school has their own book. Not sure if this is good or bad. Most schools around here are not saying which books they use. Did you use a public book and did the school use the same? |

Relax! The theory part of German boat licenses tend to be a bit tough, but there is a fixed catalog of questions and answers. With some basic command of German it should be possible to learn question/answer. The practical is easy. You should speak with the examiners prior to the theory exam and make clear that you are not a native German speaker. They will be most helpfull. Do the same at the practical. |

Hi,
if you are from UK you don´t need any licence for a sport-boat in Germany. Your passport is your licence.

Unfortunately this is terrible misinformation. A person living in the UK may drive boats in Germany for no longer than 6 month without a licence. A person resident in Germany needs the German licence.

I used these books Der amtliche Sportboot-Fuhrerschein See (Graf/Steinicke) Der amtliche Sportboot-fuhrerschein Binnne Both books can be found on ebay or amazon.de I do not understand how after ten years living in Germany you think this is so complicated! You are right it is not easy but is anything in life?,like I said before in another post start writing (at least three times)the answers and after a while it will start to make sense. |

After ten years I still find it hard for one reason, all my friends are English speaking, the Germans I know all want to speak English. I have since enrolled back in Grman classes, this still wont help me. I have since gotten the questions all 362 of them for the sea license and I must ask this, some have one question and three answers, are those all the right answers or must I pick one of them or do I have to learn all as all pertain to a particular question? its confusing because not all are like that but many. |
